A Whole Mess of Updates
Wow! What a crazy couple of weeks it’s been here in DG Land!
First, thanks to everybody at ComicCon and Gen Con who stopped by and said hello! Our screening at ComicCon was a whole lot of fun. Present from DG were Emily Olson (The Princess; “The Gamers”), Mike Bottorff (Co-composer: “The Gamers”), Steve Payne (Guy Who Gets His Pants Stolen; “The Gamers”), Krystel Torkko (Store Manager; DGP), and Jimmy McMichael (Herr Doktor; “Dead Camper Lake”). Not only did the audience love the film, laughing hard enough to bring in new curious souls throughout the screening, but we were able to do a hit and run with Sean Astin, leaving a copy of the DVD in his bemused hands.
The following week, we hit Gen Con. What a show! Present from DG were Matt Vancil (Writer, Director, Hunk; “The Gamers”), Nathan Rice (Newmoon; “The Gamers”), Ben Dobyns (Editor, co-composer, DVD author; “The Gamers”), Chris Ode (Foley; “The Gamers”), Steve Wolbrecht (co-composer; “The Gamers”), and Mike Bottorff (credited above). Within five minutes of the dealers’ floor opening, we had fans at our booth who were clamoring to meet us and get their DVD signed. Over the course of the weekend, we visited with many of the current and past creators of Dungeons and Dragons, said “Hi” to Monte Cook (commentary track; “The Gamers”), had a great conversation with Aaron Williams (writer, artist; “Nodwick”), who sent a ton of people over to buy our film while he was signing autographs (Thanks, Aaron!), gave a copy of the DVD to Ray Park (Darth Maul; “Episode I”), and had a surprise visit from one of the creators of Dragonlance, Tracy Hickman, who signed autographs and told us what a fan he was of our work. Beyond that, we met some really cool folks around the con, including the guys from Paizo Publishing, the writers of a great new RPG, Pax Draconis, and a bunch of writers and designers from Wizards of the Coast. Also of note was fan filmmaker Chris from theforce.net and fanfilms.com, who has a radio interview with us posted over in the media section of theforce.net. Over the course of the weekend, we screened “The Gamers” three times in the 500 Ballroom as part of the first ever Gen Con Fan Film Festival, which we were delighted to discover that we had won! That’s right, “The Gamers” is the first ever film award winner at Gen Con! All told, we had an incredible time at Gen Con and can’t wait to see everyone again this winter at Gen Con SoCal.
Did you catch that we had a booth at Gen Con? Yeah. We were selling DVDs. However, we also took that opportunity to introduce our brand new Gamers t-shirts, which feature two exciting designs. Each one has the Gamers’ logo with gaming dice on the front left breast in black and royal blue. On the back of one is the tagline “Honour, Valour, Gloury, Dourks!” and on the other is Rogar’s classic gaming quote “Am I still unconscious?” The “Unconscious” version sold especially well at Gen Con, which means that it currently is in very short supply. However, a limited number of those shirts, along with a more reasonable number of the “Dourks”, are available right now in our online store for only $15! Made of 100% naturally colored cotton, these short-sleeved t-shirts will let you proudly announce that you’re a gamer to people who get it and to confuse the rest of the general public! And of course, we’re still selling the DVD and VHS of “The Gamers”, as well as a VHS of the documentary “A Time to Remember” and the film that started it all, “Demon Hunters”.
Also, DG is proud to announce that “The Gamers” is now being distributed through Alliance Games! If you’re a game store owner, now is the time to check the Alliance catalogue and get a copy or three for your store at unbeatable wholesale prices! (Other distribution opportunities are available by writing retail@deadgentlemen.com.)
But wait! That’s not all! In addition to convention appearances and the premiere of exciting new products, the Dead Gentlemen have also been hard at work on your entertainment future. That’s right, on July 18th, 2003, principal photography began on our new feature film, “Unreality”. The film is so new that we don’t even have a web page for it yet. A satire and comedy about reality television, the film shows what happens when a group of contestants on a reality show decide to fight back and screw over the show’s producers. Conceived of in early May, the entire movie has been developed by DG Improv, with the addition of many other talented comedy improv actors from across Washington State. And as you may have guessed by now, the entire film is improvised! That’s right: from the bare bones of a plot outline, these talented actors and a flexible, professional crew have put together a complex, twisted, and immensely funny film experience that we plan to premiere next year. Watch this space as we put together a web page for the film, post film clips from behind the scenes, and begin to reveal the crazy people who made it all possible! Directed by Ben Dobyns, “Unreality” is an exciting new direction for Dead Gentlemen Productions that we can’t wait to share with you. Email info@deadgentlemen.com for more information about the film.
We’re also hard at work on the long-delayed feature film “Dead Camper Lake”. Completely digitally remastered, this final version of the film features the demon hunter Gabriel and the wimp Chris as they discover a demonic conspiracy in snowbound Dead Camper Lake.
Whew. Are you exhausted yet? Why not stop by our forums and take a breather? Or if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, send an email off to input@deadgentlemen.com with your thoughts, questions, and favorite gaming stories. And remember, development on a certain high-profile sequel film about gaming is just around the corner…
